Role of the Board of GovernorsGrant MacEwan University The Board of Governors for Grant MacEwan University is comprised of twelve individuals, appointed by the Lieutenant Governor: eight external Governors who reflect the various sectors of the community served by the University; four internal Governors representing Students, Faculty, MacEwan Staff Association, plus the President as an ex-officio member. The Board is responsible and accountable directly to the Alberta Legislature through the Minister of Advanced Education and Technology and ultimately, the people of Alberta. The Board recognizes that its role is in governance, not management. That task is delegated to the University Administration, headed by the President and CEO, who is appointed by the Board of Governors. Further, the Board recognizes its role in advocating for and serving its many stakeholders. One of its most important obligations is to ensure that Grant MacEwan University is a well-managed institution.
As representatives of the community, both internally and externally, the key responsibilities of the Board of Governors of Grant MacEwan University are: - Leadership of the direction and implementation of the University's mission and strategic plan;
- Governance of the University through establishing the governing structure;
- Adoption of policies for the delivery of high quality instruction and efficient stewardship of University resources;
- Maintenance of effective communication with the University community;
- Maintenance of the financial integrity of the University;
- Monitoring of University performance in key educational and administrative areas;
- The job description, selection, and regular evaluation of the President.
The Board carries out these activities through regular Board meetings, which are open to the public, and has operating committees for key functions including Audit/Finance, Human Relations, Campus Planning, and Risk Management. Board members also participate on internal University committees for selecting the MacEwan Medallion Award, Distinguished Citizen Honorary Diploma and Distinguished Alumni Award.
